Tornado Fire Damage and Safety

If you live in the state of Oklahoma, then you probably already know that you are located smack in the middle of what is colloquially known in the United States as “Tornado Alley”. The Tornado Alley is where most tornadoes commonly occur, a swathe of land between the Rocky and Appalachian mountains. Although all of the country is subjected to tornadoes, this particular area of the U.S. has historically recorded more frequent tornadoes, and Oklahoma is notoriously prone to massive super-cellular tornadoes.

As a result, Oklahoma and all other places along the Tornado Alley have stricter building regulations than the rest of the country. The building codes call for stronger roofs and sturdier building foundations. At most places, underground structures or storm cellars are even required for protection in the event of destructive tornadoes. Tornado sirens dot the communities, and awareness of tornado occurrences is media-driven and therefore high among residents.

Tornado alley residents naturally possess a healthy respect for the damage a tornado can bring. One of the consequences they fear the most is the potential for fire damage. And the probability of a fire outbreak after tornado devastation is high indeed. For instance, gas lines may be damaged by the tornado, or even gas containers and worse, vehicles of gas tanks, may leak and explode. In fact, even debris and damaged electrical wires can ignite and cause much fire damage. An innocuous puddle of water and even household appliances can cause electrocution and fire. In the event of power failures, poorly-maintained generators can start up but can also cause serious fire damage. Post-tornado fires caused by improper heating and cooking methods can also potentially start a fire.

To prevent any of these fire-causing events to occur, tornado-affected homeowners need to ensure safety in many areas. One of them is chemical safety. Some chemicals are so volatile when uncontained, so there is a need to inspect one’s property and look for spillage of highly-combustible materials like gasoline, paint thinner, or even lighter fluids. These spills need to be removed completely and the area should be blown out or ventilated, because combustible gasses may still linger in the air and when an errant flame or heat source is exposed to it, fire damage may inevitably occur.

Another thing to ensure is electrical safety. After a tornado, it is better to assume that all wires left lying on the ground are electrically charged. Frayed appliance cords need to be replaced as soon as possible, and exposed electrical outlets need to be fixed immediately. It is best to ask the help of a licensed electrician run a thorough check of the house to check for potential fire outbreaks and prevent fire damage.

Once fire hazards have been identified, the potential for fire damage is lessened after a tornado occurrence. Tornado-affected homeowners need to be very conscientious in safeguarding their homes and loved ones from a post-tornado fire outbreak. No one wants the unpleasant scenario of surviving a tornado only to be dealing with serious fire damage from a tornado-caused fire afterwards.
